Indianapolis · Chapter 1
Jaxon Carter
Put Jaxon Carter in a roomful of strangers and he’ll hang back long enough to figure out who’s who. Give him a little time and you’ll wonder who let the loud one in.
At twenty-three, Jaxon picks up work wherever it takes him. He’s tended bar, worked events, and put in his share of manual labor. He travels light, though he still makes room for a lockpicking kit. His dad took him to a beginners’ class when he was fifteen. Jaxon kept practicing.
The drive home
Before dawn in Indianapolis, Jaxon is trying to get to his mother’s hospital room. He missed visiting hours. He has things to tell her, and every light on the way there seems to turn green.
